How to get into the Industry
Before employment as tradesman into the Jewellery industry all apprentices must complete Stage 1, 2 and 3 of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery. In the event of a student gaining an apprenticeship registered with the Jewellery Industry Registration Board of New Zealand Incorporated (JIRBNZinc). It is recognized by the JIRBNZinc that any of the three stages 1, 2 or 3 in OP3238 Certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery that may have been completed prior to gaining a registered apprenticeship will be recognized as such by JIRBNZ and be automatically recorded as completed in the apprentices Workshop Training Record Book. The completion of the three stages 1, 2 and 3 of OP3238 Certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery is a mandatory requirement for apprentices to have recorded as successfully completed in the JIRBNZinc issued Apprentice Workshop Training Record Books and to therefore mandatory to satisfy the requirements of their registered apprenticeship agreements . The purpose of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery Stages 1, 2 and 3 is to provide students with theoretical knowledge in Manufacturing Jewellery of workshops, tooling, manufacturing processes, setting of gemstones and engraving, products produced, gemstone characteristics, and historical manufacturing and calculatory techniques that may not be covered in some workshops. Students are asked to demonstrate an understanding of each assignment by undertaking a short series of reflective questions contained at the end of each assignment. One formal nationwide examination is held in November of each year and is only necessary for the completion of Stage 3. There is also a separate practical assessment that is to be completed only by those students that hold a registered contract with JIRBNZinc or those who have access to a suitable workshop and tooling. This is again a mandatory requirement for apprentices to have recorded as successfully completed in the JIRBNZinc issued Apprentice Workshop Training Record Books and to therefore mandatory to satisfy the requirements of their registered apprenticeship agreements.
